The Timberland brand’s heritage has always been innovation, hard work, and love for nature. The outdoors is their inspiration for the creation of new boots and innovative features. They are committed to making the world greener, their products better with less impact on the environment, and the communities stronger.

When Timberland designs a new product—whether it be boots, T-shirts, jackets, glasses, shoes— not only has to look great, it also has to have the least impact on nature. When they introduced their first waterproof boots, their mission became to make products that inspire people to go outdoors and that are made with environmentally friendly products. They are crafted to last for years.

Timberland: Some History

timberland-some-history

Nathan Swartz, the founder of Timberland in 1952, was an immigrant with a dream. It all started when he bought a half-interest into the Abington Shoe Company. Nathan Swartz was a hard-working and perseverant apprentice that became the sole owner of the Abington Shoe Company when he bought out his partner and included his sons in the company.

The Abington Shoe Company soon moved to new locations such as Newmarket, New Hampshire, and a small corner of New England known for its dense forests, rivers, and majestic mountain ranges. This place experienced all types of weather—rainstorms, blizzards, extremely cold winters, and summer heat waves. Walking outside in any of these weather conditions was a problem for the people in this area, which inspired Timberland to create a solution.

They made their first original waterproof boots in 1973 and called them the “Timberland”. These boots were very well crafted, rugged, and could resist all of the elements thanks to their innovative molding technique, which was new for the footwear industry. These high-performance yellow boots set new standards for waterproof boots in the industry. Soon they were to become quite popular, from professional trade workers that needed durable gear to people who just loved to do outdoor activities and be protected from the weather conditions. These boots started to define the brand, which is why in 1978 they decided to change the name of the company to “Timberland”.

For the first time in 1980, Timberland took their products outside the USA, starting with Italy. In just eight short years, in 1988 Timberland® apparel was first introduced. Timberland takes pride in their premium leather products, which is why in 2005 Timberland co-founds the Leather Working Group (LWG) and makes a public statement to only use leather from tanneries that have a silver or gold rating from the LWG audits.

What Are Timberland Boots Made of?

The iconic yellow Timberland boots are made with nubuck leather, a full-grain leather. However, they use a variety of different materials to ensure that each pair is made of the best quality.

The uppers are mostly made of leather, which can either be full-grain, stylish suede, or nubuck. The choice of what leather is to be used on a specific boot depends on the purpose that boot is made for: hiking, working, fashion, leisure, etc. For example, if suede were to be used, it cannot be on a work boot since it’s not appropriate due to its luxurious look and feel. On the other hand, full-grain leathers are tough and durable, which makes them perfect for an outdoor workday, but too bulky to be worn every day in an office setting.

The inners contain a glove leather, which is essentially a softer and smoother hide into the lining that provides the durability and structure of leather while still being soft and comfortable on the foot; this reduces the break-in time that most shoes need.

The soles of the boots are made with an innovative injection-molding rubber technique to ensure maximum grip and durability, as well as waterproofing.

The binding and finishing are executed through the quadruple-row nylon sewing of the uppers, inners, and soles. This sewing technique is extremely flexible and strong, and also resistant to mildew and rot, which makes them perfect for all weather conditions. You can rest assured that your feet will be dry and comfortable in all kinds of weather conditions because the soles are permanently bonded to the top of the boots. And finally, the eyelets of the boots are installed by their artisans before they are sent for lacing, inspection, and retail.

What Do Reviewers Say About Timberland Boots?

Timberland boots have been a favorite American brand amongst many people for decades. Their stylish but rugged look makes them the perfect boots to be worn in any condition, working, hiking, or just as an addition to your daily outfits.

If you value durability in boots and low maintenance, check out what this reviewer had to say about their experience with Timberland boots’ durability:

“I bought a pair of Timberlands back in 2008 and wore them nearly every [day] during Upstate New York winter. I didn’t do anything special to take care of them but they still look very good for 7 year old boots. I recommend Timberlands based off my experience with them.”

Many reviewers agree that the Timberland boots can be worn in all types of weather conditions, without sacrificing the boots’ quality:

“Timberlands are really good quality wise. I’ve had a pair for about 6 years now and I’ve ran around and beat them to hell. I literally play football in the snow and blizzards with them and they’re still good.”

And if you’re just looking for a pair of comfortable and stylish boots, many customers have the same experience as this reviewer does:

“I’m gonna keep this short and sweet. I have been wearing Timberlands for the last 20 year, yeah like back in their heyday in the mid to late 90s. So I have watched Timberland Boots evolve from a Construction type of boot to Urban footwear. They are definitely stylish, they will never die out and they are actually comfortable nowadays.”

Conclusion

The Timberland brand continues to grow and offers products that are part of daily life and a great addition either to our wardrobe, work gear, or hiking equipment. If you are looking for a brand that makes excellent quality boots that are appropriate for all kinds of weather conditions, are objectively stylish, and will last you for years to come, you should not hesitate and purchase a pair of your choosing.
